About

"Permastead" was a lazy portmandeau of "permaculture" (itself a portmandeau of "permanent" and "agriculture" in case you didn't know) and "homestead" - a search indicated it's not in wide use so I'm using it.

About my Social Media Policy: There are certain "social media" sites I won't use, and many more I simply don't.  The "free services" I particularly avoid are not coincidentally the most popular.  (I refuse to even use names here; I won't add to any meta-results.)

The reason I (perhaps pointlessly, perhaps not) boycott the "bigbook" in particular is their own policies for information acquisition and retrieval.  To be clear, I opt to not use it because I don't agree with their practices; I am not expecting them to change to suit me.

It comes down to a phrase used by author Carla Emery ("The Encyclopedia of Country Living"): captive consumer.  She was referring to urban dwellers forced to exchange whatever commodities they have access to (wages, typically) to provide basic human needs of food, shelter and clothing.  But the reality of captivity has reached further than this.

Information (the ability to educate and improve ourselves) is another basic human need, and therefore the right to have access to information is a basic human right.  For any entity to attempt to prevent free access of another's life-giving rights is considered "wrong." "Free service" websites that restrict access to information are not beneficial to the user, only to the owner.
